Rare-earth metals have been used in the production of hybrid engines for a long time but, with the projected cost of these metals increasing by 14% a year, Honda has decided to cut their reliance on them. They've decided to try a new process sure to save them - and drivers - a lot of money!

They're going to use a new lighter material called neodymium in the production of their upcoming hybrid minivan - the Honda Freed - that will be released later this year in Japan. Not only is the material less expensive but it will also lead to a lighter engine so you can get even more miles out of your efficient hybrid drives. There's no word yet on a western release for the Freed but we'll be sure to keep you updated if new information arises.
