Know the Difference Between AWD and 4WD

Cars themselves can look wildly different and it's easy to see their visual differences. But what isn't so easy to see is the type of drivetrain that your vehicle is using. Two of the more common and easily confused drivetrains are All Wheel Drive (AWD) and Four Wheel Drive (4WD), so we here at Carson Honda want to be sure that you know the difference so you can be an informed car buyer.

The main difference is the ability to switch between a four-wheel drive mode and a two-wheel drive mode. 4WD vehicles usually allow you to switch your vehicle to send torque to all four tires only when you need it, such as when there is snow on the ground or your vehicle is stuck in mud. AWD vehicles, on the other hand, always send torque to all four tires and the driver does not have the option to switch this off.
